First-time buyers
Buying your first car in Tacoma, WA?
No credit history doesn't mean no car. Some of the lenders Cars R Us works with have programs built specifically for first-time buyers — approval based on your income and stability, not a credit score you haven't had a chance to build yet. We'll walk you through every step, in plain language.
How your first car purchase works here
1. Talk or apply — your choice
Start with the online application, or text us first if you'd rather ask questions before applying. No application is needed just to talk it through.
2. We match you to the right lender
First-time-buyer programs look at income and work stability instead of credit history. We put your application in front of the lender that actually fits your situation.
3. Insurance, keys, done
Every financed car needs insurance before it drives off — and we've helped a lot of first-time buyers get insured or find a better rate than their first quote.
What actually matters for a first-time approval
Helps
- Steady income you can document (pay stubs or bank statements)
- Time at your job — stability counts more than a big paycheck
- A down payment sized to the car (no fixed number — it depends on the car and lender)
- A trade-in, if you have one — it can count toward the down payment
- Picking a car whose payment genuinely fits your budget
Doesn't disqualify you
- No credit history at all — that's what first-time-buyer programs are for
- No co-signer — accepted if you have one, but most first-timers qualify on their own
- Not having insurance yet — it's required before you drive off, and we're good at helping you get it (or find a better rate than your first quote)
- Not knowing how any of this works — that's our job to explain
First-time buyer questions, answered straight
Can I get a car loan with no credit history?
Yes — some of the lenders Cars R Us works with have first-time-buyer programs made for people with no credit history. Approval looks at your whole situation: income, work stability, and budget — not just a score you haven't had time to build.
Do I need a co-signer?
Usually not. A co-signer is an option that can help in some situations, but many first-time buyers qualify on their own income.
How much do I need for a down payment?
It depends on the car and the lender — there's no fixed number. A down payment usually helps your approval and lowers your payment, and a trade-in can count toward it. Tell us your budget and we'll work within it.
Do I need insurance before I can drive home?
Yes — insurance is required for every financed vehicle, first-time buyer or not. Don't let that stop you: Cars R Us has a lot of experience helping buyers get insured or find better rates, and we can point you in the right direction.
Will financing my first car build my credit?
It can. Auto loans from banks and finance companies are typically reported to the credit bureaus, so on-time payments can help you build a credit history — one of the big advantages of a real auto loan for a first-time buyer.
What should I bring?
A valid driver's license, proof of income (recent pay stubs or bank statements), and proof of residence (a utility bill works). Bring those three and we'll walk you through the rest.
